INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: Kokum Butter (garcinia indica)

Organic Raw Unrefined Kokum Butter


Also known as: Bindin, Biran, Bhirand, Bhinda, Katambi, Panarpuli, Ratamba or Amsool

A member of the Mangosteen family, originating from Western India, Konkan Region

Garcinia Indica seed contains 23-26% oil

Seed to Butter Process:

  • Unhulled, garcinia indica seeds, are sun dried

  • Shells are separated from kernels

  • Clean seed kernels are poured into a steam boiler and grinder

  • Ground kokum kernels are sent to the oil press

  • Hot, unfiltered, kokum oil is collected in large pots

  • A by-product called, kokum cake, is collected and used in animal feed

  • The hot, unfiltered oil, is boiled with a small amount of water

  • Any impurities and solid matter in the oil are trapped at the bottom with water

  • The filtered oil is skimmed off the top

  • The filtered oil is then churned for 6-8 hours to become solid

  • The now solid butter is placed in molds in preparation to be shipped

Oleic fatty acid 7.2%

palmetic acid 2.5%

stearic acid 56.4%

Olein 39.4%

Linolein 1.7%

Glycerides

Trislelrin 1.5%

Oleodistearin 68%

oleopalmitostearin 8%

palmettodiolein 20%

triolein 2%


Uses:

  • Prevents dry skin

  • Aids in healing ulcers, fissures of lips, hands, and feet

  • Aids in regenerating new skin cells and aids in preventing degeneration of skin cells

  • Non-comodegenic (won’t clog your pores)

  • High in antioxidants 

  • High oxidative stability (basically, it’s a very stable fat and not susceptible to turning rancid easily)

  • Softens skin and improves skin flexibility

  • Kokum considered most stable exotic butter which does not need any refrigeration.

  • Specific remedy for diarrhea and dysentery

  • Considered nutritive, demulcent, astringent and emollient

  • Kokum and or some of its phytochemical possess antibacterial, anti fungal, anti ulcerogenic, cardioprotective, anticancer, chemopreventitive, free radical scavenging, antioxidant, and anti obesity effects.

  • Same amount of medium chain triglycerides as COCOA butter
